Samuel Backett (1906–1989)
Irlandzki pisarz, tworzący do 1947 w języku angielskim, później we francuskim. Zyskał światową sławę, laureat Nagroda Nobla w 1969. Od 1938 mieszkał we Francji. Przedstawiciel awangardowego teatru absurdu. Twórczość utrzymana w klimacie skrajnego pesymizmu wynikającego z charakteru cywilizacji współczesnej i bezsensu losu ludzkiego, m.in. w głośnych dramatach: Czekając na Godota (1952, wydanie polskie 1956), Końcówka (1957, wydanie polskie w tymże roku), Radosne dni (1961) i Ostatnia taśma Krappa (1959).
Rozpoczął swą twórczość nowatorskimi powieściami, m.in.: Murphy (1938), trylogia: Molloy (1951, wydanie polskie 1983), Malone meurt (1951) i Nienazywalne (1953, przekład polski w Literaturze na Świecie 1975), Watt (1953, wydanie polskie 1993). Nadto przekłady: Nowele (1958), Teatr. Czekając na Godota i inne (1973), Pisma prozą (1982), Dzieła dramatyczne (1988). Także szkice krytyczne, słuchowiska radiowe. ▲
